Because contacting potential interviewees and setting up/conducting the interviews may take more time than your normal homework for this class,we will not meet as a class on Thursday, February 11. Use the time wisely. Ideally, you'll be able to schedule at least one of your interviews during our normal class time.
Assignment
Conduct two interviews with professionals (preferably in your desired professional field) about their communication practices in their workplace.
Guidelines
One of your interviews can be with a friend or family member, but not both.
One of your interviews should be with a person who currently works in your professional field.
One of your interviews can be a current McKendree employee, but not both.
Both interviews should be conducted in person, over the phone, or through video. No email-only interviews unless the interviewee requests that without you giving them that option.
Timeline
Here is the timeline I suggest you follow to complete the interviews in a timely manner.
Tuesday, February 9
Brainstorm a list of 3-5 people whom you could interview for this assignment and find their contact information. If you'll be contacting them by email, draft and edit the email request. If you're not sure who to interview, contact your advisor, or the alumni office so they can put you in touch with someone.
Draft and refine the questions you intend to ask. I recommend preparing approximately 10 questions. More than that will become unwieldy and may take too much of the interviewee's time. Fewer than that, and you may be unprepared and not receive enough information. Here is a document listing potential interview questions. Please feel free to add questions to this document as you think of them, but do not delete any existing questions.
Collaborative Interview Questions Document
Wednesday, February 10
Send emails or make phone requests to interview no later than noon on Wednesday. DO NOT put this off! You may need to find someone else if you don't receive a positive response right away. If people don't get back to you about your request, begin contacting others on your list.
Thursday, February 11 through Monday, February 15
Conduct your interviews.
Tuesday, February 16
The required write-up for this assignment is due (see next blog post for details).
