For Tuesday, February 9

(Note: This is a small change from our calendar, so do this blog assignment rather than what the calendar says.)

Read: Read Chapter 6, paying particular attention to the section on Planning and the guidelines for effective interviews.

Write: Prove It #2, Part 1
Job advertisements in your desired professional fields often list communication skills among the requirements but don't give much (or any) detail about what kinds of communication you'll be expected to perform in the workplace. Using at least three different research skills discussed in Chapter 6, research these three related questions:

  • What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
  • What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
  • How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
As you conduct your research, try to identify different modes (oral, written, creative, etc.), genres (reports, videos, social media, software documentation, lab reports, etc.) and skills (collaboration, independent work, Photoshop, audience analysis, presentations, editing, etc.) used by professionals in your field.

Summarize your findings in a blog comment of at least 250 words.

  1. • What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
o CREATIVE THOUGHT MATTERS. (College, 2016) That is the slogan listed on the job position for an athletic communication assistant and (shocker) that is exactly what I want to do. Employers no longer want the typical cookie cutter applicant they want someone who is creative and someone who can take nothing and make a revenue creating idea.
    • What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
o In athletic communications the kind of communication is in the name. I will be using the power of communication to promote the university that I work for either to victory or defeat that my future school possesses. I will be in charge of making a devastating loss seem like a small matter that the team could recover from. I will also be the person called in by parents asking why there child was not given adequate writing about or giving directions on how to get to the sport complex. Not only will I have coaches, players, and the NCAA breathing down my back but the parents as well and sometimes that can be worse than the previous three combined.
    • How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
o Having strong communication skills in my profession, professionals will only strive for bigger and better things. They will be able to speak clearly and well-informed to Athletic Directors whenever the department would need something and also when they need anything from a coach having that interpersonal communication with the coach will help as well.

  3. • What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
I am interested in the field of news broadcasting, so I researched what specific types of communication are needed for this field. Specific communication skills needed for an entry level broadcaster include excellent speaking and writing skills. This is expected because broadcasters generally need to be proficient in journalism, also. Another type of communication needed is team communication. A team of news broadcasters need to be able to communicate and perform well together. Having good investigative skills also related to communication, knowing how to find answers to questions and gathering information for your story. A separate genre of communication preferred is graphic and animation skills. Employers prefer hiring someone with experience in several software.

    • What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
News broadcasters have to often use on-scene communication. That is, they conduct live interviews on the scene where the news takes place. Communication involving video production is used on a daily basis. Fast written communication in form of journalism with strict deadlines is also expected.
    • How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
Strong communication skills allow News Broadcasters to be bold in their journalism and not be afraid to ask the tough questions. It helps them to eloquently pitch news stories and ideas to their editors and producers. Journalism and broadcasting cover a wide variety of topics, so being a skilled communicator in all areas helps them relate to the variety of people they interact with. Whether they are interviewing a politician or the common citizen, their communication styles must adapt to the situation at hand. Strong written communication skills help a broadcaster create, edit, and proofread their stories.

  4. Coming in as a Computer Science major, I would have never expected effective communication to play such a big role in my job one day because I expected it would be a job that involved a lot of programming by myself with no distractions. However, I have quickly learned from my professors that communication will likely be a vital part of my job. Not only do you have to be able to communicate in programming languages to other programmers, you must be able to express your ideas and how your programs function to others at work that don’t understand programming languages. Programmers can be expected to not only explain their programming verbally but occasionally in writing. However, programmers prefer to insert notes into the programming itself to make it easier for viewers to quickly look at a function and read a brief note on what the function does. When it comes to the programming languages most jobs require, C and Java continue to be the language of choice. Surprisingly, a study from the Higher Education Statistics Agency showed that effective communication could be the most prominent skill looked at when employers are giving job interviews. With the way technology is expanding, programmers are needed in all kinds of job fields, often finding ways to make others’ jobs easier through their programming. Therefore they will need to be able to communicate with their colleagues in order to take their ideas and make it into a program. Lastly, besides communicating with non-programmers, we must be able to collaborate and communicate in order to write programs in groups, which will be common when it comes to writing very long programs.

  5. •What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
As a wildlife biologist you should obtain a variety of communication skills. The two main communication skills you must have would be oral and written. Oral communication would be used to speak with land owners or other agencies when working on a project. Written communication would consist of professional letters or emails to another individual.
•What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
An experienced wildlife biologist uses several communications on a daily basis. Like I mentioned earlier they will use Oral and written communication, but they will also write reports, create data tables to show progress on a specific project. Being able to write reports and produce data so others can understand your project is a great task. Other communication a person would use as a wildlife biologist would be considered a skill. ARC GIS is a highly sophisticated mapping tool. Biologists use GIS to create maps of probable endangered species locations. It takes a great deal of skill to operate, let alone understand GIS. Biologists use these maps they created to communicate with others. Whether it be contractors working in that area or to the public, to let them know of a possible endangered species in that specific area.
•How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
A biologist can benefit in a big way if they obtain strong communication skills. Once they are noticed to have such skills they can later be in charge of projects which involve a pay raise.

  6. Through quick job search, I found the following phrases from an entry level position for a probation officer:

“Exercise good judgement in handling potentially hostile situations.”

“Learn to effectively represent the Juvenile Hall in contacts with the public...”

“Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.”

In potentially hostile situations, you may need to become creative with how you handle that situation. You may have to work out a deal or resolve a problem while thinking on your toes with no warning. Also, it is important to present yourself professionally through communication. While dealing with the public and places like the city hall, it is important to come across as professional in order to be taken seriously. Emails must be written in proper format with correct grammar and spelling. Finally, oral communication in a job like this is given, however, people may look past how important written communication is. Reports must be filled out thoroughly. If a report is unclear and not thorough, it will be impossible to be able to go back and look at the offender's past records, which play a very important role in these types of situations.

People in different criminal justice professions participate in different forms of communication constantly. While talking with the person I will work under this summer, she explained how written communication is just as important as oral. Creating projects such as power-points to explain and present crime rates and data to higher up people happens frequently. Collaboration is important as well because they work with others on different projects and clients. You must stay on the same page and be up to date on all the data in order to do your job effectively. A lot of work takes place independently as well.

Communication in the field of criminal justice is extremely important. A professional could benefit from strong communication skills through a position in this field by creating a strong, yet professional, relationship with their client. In an article that I found about communication as a probation officer, it said that the most important things to remember while communicating are relationship orientations, encouragement, and being a critical thinker. This summer I am doing an internship with a probation office. If a professional at this workplace practices poor communication skills, he/she will have a difficult time controlling his/her clients. It is important to show show that you mean business in a position like this, yet if you come off too harsh, the offender may completely ignore you. Working a job like this, you are constantly doing what can be compared to a collaborative project. You are constantly working with someone else to create a positive outcome.

  7. What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?: I looked up communication skills for PR and social media jobs, so communication is an integral part of these jobs. I looked more specifically at what types of communication skills that they are looking for. Some of the skills needed for entry level jobs are written communication, creativity, social media experience, and multimodal experience. Companies want to be able to see that a person can do more than write papers. They want to see experience with editing software both for images and videos, blogging experience, etc.

What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
Written communication is one kind of communication that is used regularly in this field. It could be in house writing or the kinds of things that are released to the public. I am currently interested in social media marketing, so social media is a communication form of communication that is used often. This can extends to many types of actual media, since it is a multimodal form of communication. Blogging is also a large part of this field, so again written communication is a key element. This kind of job also works a lot with others so interpersonal communication is also used on a regular basis.

How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?:
My whole field is communication based, so without communication skills a person would not really have a job. But the more diverse the set of communication skills is, the more valuable the person is.

  8. • What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry level position in your field?
o I am planning on being a petroleum engineer but definitely some type of engineer. Obviously, going into this field, everyone is very smart and well educated. I am going to need to be able to communicate with higher level employees as well employees who are at my level. So when at meetings I am going to need to know the proper terminology for different things in the field as well as know how to speak proper English. If I need to write a paper or email to someone I am also going to need to know proper grammar and terminology there too.
    • What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
o Being in the engineering field, the types of communication that is going to be happening on a daily basis is going to be a lot of oral communication between you and your group but mainly it will be over email, texts, and through projects considering that the job requires a lot of on site projects. Also, you will have to learn how to adapt very quickly, since drilling for oil is not always predictable.
    • How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
o A professional in my field will benefit from strong communication skills because they’re going to have to be on top of everything so being a strong communicator will help an engineering get things done more effectively. Also, the stronger communicator a person is, the better in any field of work because a person will be able to get a message through clearly and effectively so any boss would love that over a weak communicator so that will in turn help out for future promotions.

  9. 1. What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
As an Information Technology major, support jobs are a common entry-level job. Having clear communication with nontechnical clients is essential. Being able to clearly train, solve, or troubleshoot with a customer are some of the skills i am supposed to have.
    2. What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
In a discussion i had with Larry Roth at Thomson Reuters, he said the waterfall method known as Agile is very common in software development. Different types of development are split up among several teams. Instead of having the software developers send all of their code to the IT department to look over at the end of the month, snippets of code are sent to IT go over. If a snippet cannot be resolved within twenty minutes, it sent on to the next level for further discussion and revision. This method strengthens communication between different teams by having every stage have a chance to visit the product's design.
    3. How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
An IT professional, learning new methods and languages involving computers is always a necessity. Asking and receiving questions from peers can benefit a professional greatly. Knowledge is power and everyone around you has a lot of information to give.

  10. In the financial world where I will constantly be communicating with potential clients, having good communication skills is vital no matter what level I am at. At an entry level position, an employer is going to want to see that I can be a positive and outgoing communicator in order to gain more clients. It is also highly important that a candidate for an entry level job be able to communicate well with managers and coworkers. Being able to know how to communicate to different audiences is vital. Regardless of if I become a financial analyst or financial planner it is imperative that I know how to speak to clients and managers. This requires both oral and written skills. On a daily basis I will be communicating with CFOs about projects in the company, or the IT manager about IT costs, and I will need to know how to speak to this variety of people. Another highly important communication skill that I will need is listening. Being able to actively listen to CFOs, coworkers, and clients is important to make sure I am doing what is asked of me correctly. I need to be able to provide feedback to people to ensure tasks are done efficiently and properly. This is a written skill of being able to write reports. ” The key is to discuss options with your team and make them feel included and valued in the process” (Sanchez, 2014). Building consensus is one last skill that will lead to effective communication. Being able to work well with a team on a company project is vital in order to get projects done in a timely matter. A financial professional often needs to collaborate on projects with coworkers. There is a wide array of skills needed to be a financial professional because I need to be able to work independently and also with groups. I also need to be able to communicate through both oral and written communication.

Throughout education we are explicitly trained to add comments in our code to help other programmers understand our ideas. We must use the computing language to communicate on a universal level. During my intensive job search I have found that companies are looking for strong written and verbal communication skills. My research has shown these soft skills are vital for success in my future. According to Ryan Dube at makeuseof.com, 6 soft skills all tech workers should have are communication, team player, presentation skills, networking, a positive attitude, and innovation and creativity. Effective communication is a rare-essential skill in technology. We must know how to communicate our high-level thinking to all levels of understanding. “Behind every successful project is a successful team” (Dube, 2013). Group dynamics brings new ideas to the table and helps test every possible error. Presentation skills are required to help sell new algorithms and ideas. We must know our materials and the audiences’ needs. Networking keeps professionals connected and pushes growth in the industry. Also, finding tech recruiters is nearly impossible without networking. A positive attitude keeps the work environment strong. While I may not be working directly with customers, I will have to deal with tricky coworkers. Innovation and creativity work outside coding too. I will be faced with interpersonal issues. I must use my creativity to find new solutions to these problems.

  13. • What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?

In the field of Computing, communication skills are more important than must people realize, even the undergrads. The skills we need to fill entry-level positions include both oral and written communication. When we are writing code, we must be good writers for our ideas to be expressed and understood well. If we were to have a great idea, but not be able to communicate it effectively, it would almost be as if we didn’t have it at all. As for communication for software, strong documentation and commenting are genres that entry-level workers would be required to be good at.

    • What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
Aside from commenting in code to help themselves understand their choices at a later time and to help others who will see this code, professionals in Computing must be able to collaborate with each other effectively as almost all projects are completed in groups. Besides collaborating, the professionals might have to communicate with customers about the product or even present the project to their supervisors. For both of these forms of communication, the professional may have to perform audience analysis as these two groups, customers and supervisors, may not have as much technical experience as the professional.

    • How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
A professional in Computing that has strong communication skills will find it easier to be employed after graduation, easier to work with others in projects, and could even be promoted sooner than another professionals with weaker communication skills. Along with a stronger likelihood to be employed post-graduation, those in Computing with strong communication skills will find networking to be easier and to also be an avenue towards a great position.

  14. •What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
I am interested in a Botanist. I researched what specific types of communication are needed for this field, which you do need strong communication skills. Some specific communication skills needed for an entry level Plant Botanist include reading, oral, and written communication.
•What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
On a regular basis Botanist participate in conducting field surveys. You need to be able to read a field survey of a particular area such as a prairie and be able to compile a survey from other prairies. Reading and understanding written documents as you can see is very important. Oral communication is also very important because it would be used to speak with land owners or other agencies when working on a project among landowners with their prairies. Also giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, and asking questions. Written communication is important in conducting field surveys, professional letters to other agencies and landowners, and emails.
•How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
A professional could benefit from strong communication skills through a position in botany because this whole field is based on communication, like I said earlier whether it is oral or written. It will show people you are knowledgeable in botany. Last semester I had the opportunity to be in a botany course, which I learned a lot in doing field surveys and learning about plants. I hope to take this knowledge I learned and further it this summer in an internship dealing with prairie restoration.

  15. What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
I will be getting a degree in mathematics and if there is anything I will have learned from all my classes it is the importance of clear and effective language. Mathematics is essentially a language of numbers with precise meanings that cannot be interchanged. Going into an entry level position in my field, I would be expected to follow the rules of logic, derive meaning from equations that I can put into words, and explain to others how mathematics can explain the physical world. I should be able to independently review information so that I can accurate convey these ideas to those who are not as versed in mathematics as I.
What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
The most extensive type of communication I would be expected to participate in with others in my own field would be collaborative problem solving and investigation. Perhaps done face to face, by email or by Skype, different team members might be expected to research information on a difficult problem independently and then work together the next meeting in order to solve that problem. This would involve making sub-groups perhaps to find information to present and then when actually solving the issue to remain open to what other groups had found as potential solutions.
How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
Despite being mathematicians, we would often have to write reports or give oral presentations on our findings or solutions to a given problem. If I can leave a strong impression from my clearness of word choice or acknowledgment of fellow research partners, I should be able to leave a good impression on my employers so that they know I am a quality employee to have around.

  16. As an industrial Engineer, the entry level communication skills were listed in most of the job adverts I found online. They range from contributing to projects by working with senior engineers, Participation in business developmental activities including preparation of proposals and also being able to follow instructions and to communicate with staff to understand assignments or seek clarification as necessary. There was a desired ability to modify and present AutoCAD and design layouts for processes or facilities. Industrial engineers should also endeavor to understand the customer's need and how each assigned project relates to elements of certain client's organization and to other projects. On a regular basis, industrial engineers have to be team players, investigate customer complaints and have strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills to analyze the quality assurance products produced in their respective companies at random on a daily basis and present findings to senior engineers in the company for improvement of processes used in the production line. Professionals in my field need to be good communicators and researchers. They need to be clear and give precise explanations to whatever data that is going to be analyzed and discussed about. Effective communication skill is a must since you’ll be giving lots of presentations not only to co-workers but also board members. Every entry level position I researched on kept hammering on the point strong written and verbal communication skills. Industrial engineers are also expected to be able to have a clear understanding of some technical design languages like EPDP (Enterprise Product Delivery Process) and similar programs that should have been understood before applying for a job in any of these companies.

  17. Computer scientists have a stereotype of being nerdy guys with glasses who work long hours in a room alone in front of a computer. However, many computer scientists claim that communication skills are more important in their job than technical know-how. In today's business-oriented world, problems are commonly just too large for one person to work on alone. Most companies develop software with teams of programmers, so the ability to work as a group is essential. Any team-oriented development requires frequent meetings, presentations, and reports, so both oral and written communication skills are a requirement.

On top of that, even solo projects require extensive documentation, meaning that a computer scientist needs to be able to explain their ideas in a way that others can understand. Any code must be designed in such a way that it is easy to maintain and change in the future. Computer scientists can no longer be just loners.

  18. What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
The field of work I chose to go into is event planning. Communication skills are very important with this type of work because I will have to communicate with more than a person at a time while working on more than one project. Specifically, telephone and email etiquette is expected. These communication skills are very important because this will more than likely be the first way I contact a conference center, the client, or vendor for events. I will have to be able to effectively and professionally persuade someone to have the event at my company, let me plan the event in general, or negotiate budgets, through these channels regularly so communication skills have to be strong. Other communication skills that are expected as an event planner is having good listening skills, read body language, and deal with conflict either in the work place or with clients.

What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
Regularly, event planners have to communicate with clients, different businesses, superiors, employees, and co-workers. I could possibly be talking to clients through different channels over the phone, video chat, or face to face. Also nonverbal communication will be regularly used and seen in the office between co-workers, or employees. With clients, nonverbal communication is important and needs to be paid attention to because it could make or break the event depending on if they like the service.
How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
It is beneficial to have strong communication skills because it can affect the work being done. Having good communication skills can improve productivity in the workplace. If you can communicate well and get what you need across in a professional and respected way than your team is going to want to do work for you and have things done by the time you tell them. They will want to be in the workplace and want to work with you, as well. Being a good communicator can make the team or hinder the team. Having good communication can benefit the professional because if they listen well and make the event phenomenal, the client will give good recommendations and word of mouth so it can make the company bigger.

  19. What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?
Being entry level in event coordinating isn’t the normal entry level position where I will be grabbing coffees and picking up dry cleaning. Even an entry level position is a pretty demanding job and requires many forms of effective communication. First, I must be able to communicate with those above me, verbally and written, making sure I am tackling all the assigned duties. Second, I must be able to effectively communicate through email, not only with my coworkers, but also with clients who I am supposed to be in contact with for their event. Thirdly, I must keep up with the social media posts if that job is assigned to me.
What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
Emails are constant in the event coordinating profession. They are always sending and receiving with their many accounts. They also use phone calls for the more urgent issues and when they need assurances in a timely manner. Event coordinators are constantly emailing and calling: the clients – keeping them all updated on their event, the vendors – making sure all is going smoothly and will be where it is supposed to when it should be, the venues and hospitality – booking the needed spaces for the clients if requested to do so, and fellow coworkers – keeping everyone in the loop and in the correct time frame. I would even go as far as to say that event coordinators are likely texting a lot in this day and age as well.
How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
Event coordinating is a very fast paced job. Constantly being in the know is very important to planners. One wouldn’t want anything to slip through the cracks and cause a bridezilla to rampage or a girl to cry because it’s her party and it was ruined. Having strong communication skills via email are essential so that no one the coordinator gets in contact with has reason to be confused or mislead.

  20. What specific communication skills will you be expected to have going into an entry-level position in your field?:
I’m interested in the field of computer science and more specifically software development. I found that in this field, you would need both verbal and nonverbal skills when coming into this career. For verbal communication, the employer will probably expect you to work well and communicate well with team mates when working on projects. You would need good collaboration and converse with others to meet deadlines. As for nonverbal, if you program majority of the time, you would need to communicate effectively in your code so others can follow it if need be for modification.

What kinds of communication do people in your profession participate in on a regular basis?
When researching the skills for computer science I found a variety of different communication skills used in the professional world of computer science. Teamwork and leadership was a big one because most companies give out assignments that involve teams in order to get done. Another important skill that is oral includes presenting reasoned arguments to others. Other communication skills I found are report writing, problem-solving, negotiation, and persuasion.

How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
Having good communication skills can bring benefits to the workplace. Good communication and collaboration can help team building while in a programming team because it reduces conflict and uses time effectively. Another benefit from communication is employee morale because it creates a healthy environment and a positive attitude between employees.

  21. In an entry level position in Finance and Actuary, one would have to be able to talk with upper management, and understand what they want when they are looking to find a premium for an insurance program, or know what to do when it comes to managing the finances of the business. If going into accounting, for example, I will have to know how to be able to produce an income statement, and make sure that all of the accounts add up to the amount that it should be. Most of the language that will be used everyday in this field would be educated communication on the Insurance claims, and or the communication that would be included in finance.
A person in my field would benefit because they have to be able to talk to management, and make sure that they are portraying the information in a very logical way. So that I could do the work, and make sure that all of the information is presented in a logical format. There would have to be some type of communication within as far as understanding reports that the management could be giving you, and you have to interpret that information in a way that the audience could make a logical decision on what to do when it comes to the business, and what they want to do next.
In business we have to make a lot of decisions on how to formulate the business strategy for it to be successful, so that would include the daily research that has to be done, and presented to possibly a committee for acceptance. If there is acceptance in the type of research that was done, then it is up to me to be able to find a way to make sure that it is carried out in an efficient way.

How does a professional in your field benefit from strong communication skills?
An IT professional, learning new methods and languages involving computers is always a necessity. Asking and receiving questions from peers can benefit a professional greatly. Knowledge is power and everyone around you has a lot of information to give.
